EVERGREEN TO CASH IN ON TUPAC'S WRITINGS
By PETER LAURIA
May 16, 2007 -- Independent music publisher Evergreen Copyrights is expected to announce today that it has acquired full control of the writer's share of late rapper Tupac Shakur's song catalog, its 12th and most visible deal to date, The Post has learned.
While Universal Music Group still owns the publishing rights to Tupac's work and retains authority over licensing it for commercial use, the deal gives Evergreen financial participation in an artist who has sold 67 million albums worldwide and has appeared three times on Forbes' list of the "Top Earning Dead Celebrities."
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a source said the purchase price was between $5 million and $10 million.
Evergreen also owns the rights to works by Nick Drake, Todd Rundgren and M.C. Hammer, whose catalog the firm bought out of bankruptcy last year.
By acquiring Tupac's writer's share, Evergreen also gets to develop projects using the late rapper's catalog, which includes
more than 300 commercially released songs and about 150 unreleased songs and poems.
Some of the projects currently in development include a script written by Tupac called "Live 2 Tell," a separate feature-film biopic, a Broadway musical from Mosaic Media Group based on the rapper's life, and a video game that will coincide with a "Best of 2Pac" CD release.
The sale of music catalog rights has attracted the interest of both record labels and private-equity firms alike because of the steady cash-flow generation.
However, Evergreen, which has about $150 million in financial backing from Lehman Brothers' private-equity arm, has flown mostly under the radar.
